Measurements for Lung Volume and Lung Capacity

Following SCI, lung function tests are performed to evaluate total lung capacity, forced vital capacity (FVC), tidal volume (Vt), residual volume, expiratory reserve volume, inspiratory reserve volume, forced expiratory flow, and forced expiratory volume. These tests help determine the degree to which respiration is impaired, the degree of ventilation the patient will require, and overall patient outcomes. A detailed explanation of these tests and their parameters is outlined in the Respiratory Management Chapter in SCIRE.
