Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)

Mrs. L.V. was an active participant in the afterhours “Cycle across Canada” club which involved the use of FES bikes in the physiotherapy gym. Mrs. L.V. was determined to cycle across Ontario before completing her rehabilitation. Mrs. L.V. enjoyed the club as she made numerous friends and she felt that the biking improved her overall physical fitness.
Q4. What is the evidence for FES exercise training in individuals with SCI?
1.     Interventions that involve FES training a minimum of 3 days per week for 2 months may improve muscular endurance, oxidative metabolism, exercise tolerance, and cardiovascular fitness (Figures 4a and 4b).
