Respiratory Function

The patient was intubated at the scene of the injury, and successfully extubated after open reduction internal fixation of the cervical spine fractures on day two post injury. However, he suffered two episodes of pneumonia since extubation. At night and when supine for dressing or therapies he becomes short of breath. For this reason, he now sleeps sitting up in bed.

His medical team is interested in improving his respiratory function; the patient and his family do not want to use medications at this point.
