During his 8 week inpatient rehabilitation stay, Mr. LM developed 2 urinary tract infections. He was told that kidney disease is one of the biggest causes of morbidity and mortality in the first few years after acute spinal cord injury. He is surprised to hear that infections, renal stones, and bladder cancer incidence are higher in SCIs. He asks for education on bladder management.
What evidence is there for patient education programs on bladder management for individuals with SCI?
1. A variety of bladder education programs are effective in reducing UTI risk in community-dwelling persons with SCI, although limited information exists as to the most effective approaches.
