Using administrative data, Chu et al. (2009) calculated the hospital cost (in 2003 dollars) of spinal trauma patients in Taiwan. The main focus of this study was to examine concomitant injuries in individuals admitted for spinal trauma and to determine the prevalence and impact on medical utilization. The mean cost of hospitalization was presented as well as additional costs associated with factors such as sex, age, location of injury, neurological deficit, spine surgery, and presence of concomitant injuries. The net costs were calculated through a multiple linear regression model. Only total mean cost is presented here.
In Taiwan the observed mean hospital cost for SCI is approximately $1,800.
