The economic 2007 cost of SCI and TBI in Spain was examined by Garcia-Altes and colleagues (2012). Costs were calculated by combining prevalence data with estimates of resource utilization. From this, total direct and indirect costs for SCI resulting from a motor vehicle crash, or other causes, as well as TBI from a motor vehicle crash or other causes was calculated. The results presented here will focus on SCI.

Table: Mean total direct and indirect costs as reported in Garcia-Altes et al. (2012)

Total mean lifetime cost for an individual with a SCI that is a result of a motor crash is approximately $165,000 and $175,000 from other causes in Spain.
