Strength and Ambulation Training

Tyler and his family note that his muscles are weak below the level of the lesion and he just needs to strengthen those muscles.  The effect of interventions which improve lower limb strength and walking ability to assist him with relearning to walk again are discussed.
Q9.  What is the effect of interventions which improve lower limb strength and walking ability?
1. Locomotor training programs are beneficial in improving lower limb muscle strength although in acute SCI similar strength benefits can be obtained with conventional rehabilitation. (Level 4 evidence found)
2. The real benefit of locomotor training on muscle strength may be realized when it is combined with conventional therapy. (Level 3 evidence found)
3. This should be further explored in acute, incomplete SCI where better functional outcomes may be realized with the combination of therapies. (Level 4 evidence found)
